Neuschwanstein ("New Stone Swan") castle in Bavaria is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful castles in the world. Ok: unfinished and a bit of an empty shell due to the untimely death of Ludwig II. He accessed to the throne when barely 18, almost married the sister of his famed cousin Princess Sissy (who also suffered a tragic death), but never married. Turns out he was more homosexual than anything else........which did not keep him from making grand things. Some call him the "Mad King of Bavaria". I don't think he was mad in the least. Exhuberant, totally, but mad. no. He planned on building his own replica of Versailles and succeeded in completeing the central section before some people could no longer tolerate his presence and somehow managed to get rid of him. A tragic end to a somewhat tragic life.
