So at the start of the year I told the world I was bi and started openly dating guys.
Everyone was remarkably cool about it. Especially the hardest people to come out to - by general consensus of my trans support group - your parents.
Mine are in their 70s but were uber-cool. They asked who I was dating, how we met, if he is bi too, if they can see a photo, etc.
Fast forward half a year and now I'm telling people I'm non-binary, talking to a gender therapist and thinking about some sort of transition. That escalated quick.
So it was time to come out to my parents again, just as one letter further down the LGBTQ line. Went pretty well the first time, should be easy, right?
"Really?" "Seriously?" looks of disapproval and mild disgust. Dad left the room. Mum asked a few questions and said well I guess we can go shopping together, but obviously didn't like it.
Considering she'd been commenting favourably on my treasured flowery jumper and pink lotus flower harem pants an hour before, I'm kind of surprised no-one had a clue and hadn't clocked it. Did they really think I bought those from the men's section?
They've been perfectly cool since but no-one's mentioned it. It's left a bit of an elephant in the room to deal with, and I'm a talker. I don't really do elephants. I think they hope I just won't mention it again.
Still, compared to the stories of yelling and disownership and such I've heard from trans support group, I guess I got off pretty light.
In any case the hard bit is done, pat on the back for Chrissy. How it pans out now is a problem for another day.
